Buyer's Guide

AI Baseball Swing & Pitching Analysis Apps Compared

Three kinds of tools analyze a baseball swing or pitching delivery from a phone: AI video apps that return a score and drills, bat sensors that measure the bat, and 8ctane, which assesses 10 hitting or 7 pitching checkpoints and builds a four-week training plan from the results.

Below is how they compare, using each product's own published description and prices as of October 4, 2026.

The Short Answer

  • You want a quick score and a drill for under $13 a month. SwingCoach AI (hitting only), Dugout AI, Diamond Trainer AI, and Dingerly AI each take one phone video and return scores or cues with drill recommendations.
  • You want bat speed, attack angle, or ball data. Blast Motion and Diamond Kinetics measure the bat with a sensor. SmartScout tracks the pitched or batted ball from video. None of these evaluate how the body moved.
  • You want the assessment to become the training plan. 8ctane evaluates the full movement from two angles, reports every checkpoint in plain language, and on Pro builds a complete four-week plan with a video demo on every exercise. The first assessment is free.

What Each One Does

Assessment that becomes a training plan

8ctane

8ctane Technologies, Raleigh, NC

Upload a side view and a back view of a swing or a pitch. The AI works across the whole movement, from load through follow-through, and reports 10 hitting or 7 pitching checkpoints, each as Plus, Developing, or Focus with a plain-language explanation. On Pro, the assessment becomes a four-week training plan: warm-up, strength, plyos, drills, and arm care on every training day, built from programming developed by former MLB players, physical therapists, and sports scientists and fitted to your season, level, and pitching schedule. Reassess up to four times every four weeks and the plan rebuilds.

AI video score and drills

SwingCoach AI

Independent developer

Record a swing and get a 1-to-10 score across eight categories: stance and setup, load and timing, hip rotation, bat path, contact point, follow-through, head position, and weight transfer. Each fix comes with a drill. Hitting only; there is no pitching mode.

AI video score and drills

Diamond Trainer AI

Independent developer

Uses Apple’s on-device vision models, so clips do not leave the phone. Lists metrics such as hip-shoulder separation, hands-after-hips timing, swing plane variance, and head stability for hitting, and stride length ratio, arm slot, elbow flexion at max external rotation, and trunk tilt for pitching. Subsystem scores roll up into an overall efficiency score, and each improvement item can unlock a recommended drill with level-specific hints. Rated 13+.

Ball tracking

SmartScout Baseball

Knowhere, Corp.

A different category: SmartScout measures what the ball did (pitch speed, vertical and horizontal movement, spin rate and efficiency, exit velocity, launch angle), not how the body moved. Useful for tracking outcomes in bullpens and cage sessions; it does not evaluate mechanics.

Bat sensor

Blast Motion

Blast Motion

The sensor attaches to the knob of any bat and captures bat speed, attack angle, time to contact, and related plane, connection, and rotation metrics every swing. Video and 3D swing tracer overlays sync metrics at impact. It measures the bat precisely; it does not see hips, torso, or lead leg.

Bat sensor

Diamond Kinetics

Diamond Kinetics

Sensor-based swing data used by MLB, USA Baseball, Perfect Game, and others, with a smart bat option certified for in-game use. Training content is built around challenges, lessons, and games. Like any bat sensor, it reports what the bat did rather than evaluating body mechanics.

How to Choose

Body or bat?

Sensors tell you what the bat did. Video tells you what the body did. If the question is “why is my swing late” or “why does his front leg collapse,” that is a body question, and only video answers it. If the question is “what is my bat speed,” that is a sensor question.

Hitting, pitching, or both?

SwingCoach AI is hitting only. Bat sensors are hitting only by definition. 8ctane, Dugout AI, Diamond Trainer AI, and Dingerly AI cover both. If you have a two-way player, pick a tool that does both so the reports live in one place.

A score, or a plan?

Most phone apps stop at a score and a drill. That is useful for a quick check between lessons. It leaves the hard part, turning findings into weeks of structured work, to you or a coach. 8ctane is built around that second step: the assessment feeds a four-week plan with strength, mobility, plyos, drills, and arm care, fitted to your season and pitching schedule. See how plans are built.

How young is the player?

Read the age rating and ask how findings are explained. A raw angle number means little to a parent or a 12-year-old. Plain-language classifications with an explanation are easier to act on at home. Our parent guide covers age-appropriate standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best app to analyze a baseball swing?

It depends on what you want back. For a quick score and a drill, phone-only apps such as SwingCoach AI, Dugout AI, and Diamond Trainer AI are listed under $13 a month. For bat speed and attack angle, you need a bat sensor such as Blast Motion or Diamond Kinetics. If you want the analysis to turn into a complete training plan, 8ctane evaluates 10 hitting or 7 pitching checkpoints from two phone videos and builds a four-week plan from programming developed by former MLB players, physical therapists, and sports scientists.

Do I need a bat sensor to analyze my swing?

No. A bat sensor measures the bat: speed, attack angle, time to contact. It cannot see the body. Video analysis evaluates the body: hip-shoulder separation, lead leg block, head position, stride length, bat angle relative to the spine. Serious hitters often use both. If you are choosing one tool to understand mechanics, choose video.

Which apps analyze pitching mechanics, not just hitting?

8ctane, Dugout AI, Diamond Trainer AI, and Dingerly AI all list pitching analysis. SwingCoach AI is hitting only. SmartScout tracks the pitched ball (velocity, spin, movement) rather than the pitcher’s body. Bat sensors do not apply to pitching.

How much do AI baseball swing analysis apps cost?

Phone-only apps that return scores and drills are listed between $6.99 and $12.99 a month, usually with a free tier. Bat sensors cost about $150 plus a subscription. 8ctane’s first assessment is free with no credit card; Pro is $59 a month or $499 a year and includes the personalized four-week training plan and up to 4 assessments every 4 weeks.

Is phone video analysis as accurate as a motion-capture lab?

No. A 3D motion-capture lab measures joint angles directly; a phone camera cannot. What two-angle phone video can do reliably is show whether a movement pattern is present at a key frame: whether the front knee extended by contact, whether the torso stayed closed at foot plant. That is why 8ctane reports each checkpoint as Plus, Developing, or Focus with an explanation rather than as an angle measurement. 8ctane’s sister facility, 8ctane Baseball in Raleigh, runs 3D motion capture for athletes who want lab-grade numbers.

Is AI swing analysis appropriate for youth players?

Yes, as long as the standards are age-appropriate. A 12-year-old showing partial hip-shoulder separation is developing, not failing. 8ctane supports players from 8U up and explains every finding in plain language a parent can act on. Parents and guardians can contact support@8ctane.ai with questions about youth accounts and consent.
