Phone video to a training plan

How to analyze your swing or pitching video

8ctane assesses baseball mechanics from two short phone videos. Record a side view and a back view, select the key frame in each, and get a report covering 10 hitting or 7 pitching checkpoints. Your first assessment is free; Pro turns your findings into a personalized four-week training plan.

How should I record my videos?

Set up the camera before you start. The report depends on what is visible in the frames you provide.

Side view

Place the phone to the athlete's side, about 6–10 feet away in portrait orientation. Keep the full athlete and the bat or throwing arm in view throughout the movement.

Back view

Record from behind the athlete, keeping the body and full movement in view. This gives a second perspective on the same type of swing or delivery. Keep the camera and anyone recording clear of the bat and ball path.

  • Record one complete swing or pitch per clip, including setup and follow-through. Each clip should be 1–10 seconds.
  • Use a steady camera and enough light to see the body clearly. Avoid another player or a fence blocking the movement.
  • In the app, check the key frame for each view: bat-to-ball contact for hitting or front-foot contact for pitching.
  • If a key body part is cropped or blurred, record again before assessing. An explanation cannot recover detail missing from the image.

What happens after I record?

  1. 1

    Assess

Upload, pick the key frame, and 8ctane’s AI evaluates 10 hitting or 7 pitching checkpoints across your whole movement. Every one is classified Plus, Developing, or Focus and explained in plain language.

  2. 2

    Build Your Plan

Answer six quick questions — your goals, season, level, pitching schedule, training days, and days off. 8ctane matches your assessment to programming developed by our coaches, adapts it to you, and builds your four-week plan in about two minutes.

  3. 3

    Train

Every training day is complete: warm-up, movement drills, strength or plyos, hitting or throwing work, and arm care. A video demo on every exercise. Log your sets, weights, and bar speed as you go.

  4. 4

    Reassess

Up to four assessments every four weeks. New results rebuild your next four weeks — without touching the work you’ve already logged.

Selected frames are uploaded and stored with your assessment; the original videos stay on your device. Read the privacy policy.

What does the report tell me?

Each checkpoint receives a Plus, Developing, or Focus classification with a plain-language explanation. Use the findings to choose what to discuss with your coach and which patterns to work on. The Virtual Coach can explain the report; Pro adds the training plan.

Use the result in context

An assessment describes the movement visible in the submitted frames. Camera angle, image quality, and frame selection affect what can be assessed. A checkpoint classification is not a lab measurement, an injury diagnosis, or a guarantee of future performance. Use repeated recordings and coaching context when deciding what to change.

Before your first assessment

Can I analyze my baseball swing with just my phone?
Yes. 8ctane uses two short phone videos, one from the side and one from behind, to assess hitting mechanics across 10 checkpoints. You do not need a bat sensor or motion-capture equipment. Your first assessment is free.
Does 8ctane analyze pitching as well as hitting?
Yes. Choose a pitching assessment for an overhand delivery. It evaluates 7 checkpoints, including pelvis orientation, trunk-pelvis separation, arm layback, and lead-leg action. Hitting and pitching have different checkpoint reports.
Are my original videos uploaded?
Your original videos stay on your device. Selected frames are uploaded and stored with your assessment for analysis. See the privacy policy for details about information collected and stored.
What do I get for free, and when do I need Pro?
Your first assessment is free, with no credit card required. It includes the checkpoint report and the Virtual Coach to explain the findings. Pro adds a personalized four-week training plan and up to 4 assessments every 4 weeks for $59/month or $499/year.
